Railway retirees, staff call Ameachi to rescind planned ejection

Kano Railway

Some retirees and workers of the Nigerian Railway Corporation in Kano have called on the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amechi to rescind his plan of ejecting the remaining 24 staff from Kano Railway Quarters pending the hearing and determination of suit before Court of Appeal, Lagos Division.

Addressing Journalists on Thursday, the Spokesman of the Group, Kabiru Muhammmad Kuta accused President General, Nigerian Union Railway Workers, Comrade Luka Ajiji, of being incapacitated to protect their right and interest as a union leader.

He pointed out that on 18th April, 2022 Comrade Ajiji and Chairman Senior Staff Association, Mainasara Aliyu had secretly visited Kano and held a meeting with the remaining 24 staff residing in Railway Staff Quarters, Kano.

“During our last meeting held on 18th April, 2022 he threatened us that the Minister of Transportation needs to take over the quarters even if we like it or against our wish,”

“This is why we’re appealing to him to comply with the court order, especially in his position as Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.

He, however, said that after a recent publication in National Dailies, the management of Railway had come up with a new deception, it is compiling names of those who want to receive the sum of N5 million and forfeit their Quarters.

Kuta explained that following the alleged threat, 11 staff submitted their names while 13 declined.

“In the past when they wanted to eject us in our residences they gave us repatriation money to go and rent house, but later after few months they deducted all the money they gave us from our salaries, we will not accept any money offered to us, because it contradicted the Federal Government monetization policy of Railway Quarters”, he explained.
