Gender Based Violence In Kano: NGO Proffers Solution on Menace

A Consultant with Rule of Law And Anti- Corruption (RoLAC) a European Union Funded and British Council Implemented Programme, Mrs. Amina Salihu has said that crafting Sexual Offender Database will mitigate the prevalence occurrence of rape and Gender Base Violence in Kano.

Mrs. Salihu stated this during a stakeholders meeting on modalities to establish the Database in Kano.

The Consultant maintained that, establishing the Sexual Offender Database in Kano State is imperativee, noting that Data from different sources of Sexual Assault Referral Centers ( SARC,s) revealed that Kano has the highest number of prevalence occurrence of Gender Based violence in Northern Nigeria.

Salihu lamented lack of reporting culture as part of the challenge bedeviling the
effort of
stakeholders in fighting the menace in the State.

She Commended Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of the State, Barrister Musa Abdullahi lawan for his commitments and passion toward curtailing the menace in the state.

” Attorney General has shown particular concern about doing something around rape and Gender based violence in Kano,”

She however explained that the purpose of the meeting was to discuss and understand the prevalence of Gender Based Violence in kano and began to proffer solutions on how to mitigate the menace by responding appropriately.

In her conclusion, Mrs. Amina stated that 3 key issues will be consider in addressing the menace of rape and Gender Based Violence. Her words” The effective use of Justice System to bring perpetrators to book, bringing together Service Providers to better understand their role, provide technical capacity to all stakeholders responsible for reporting of cases, Investigation, Prosecution, Rehabilitation, Counseling and Awareness Campaign.

Speaking to Justice Watch News, Dr. Kabir Hamisu Kura a participant from Community Development Initiative said Sexual Offender Database is one of the best idea, calling on People to support it.

Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kano State Council stressed the need for rigorous awareness campaign through both broadcast and electronic medium saying the role of media in curtailing the menace of rape and Gender Based Violence can never be underrated.

Also speaking Hajia Mairo Bello Kano Coordinator, Adolescent Health And Information Project ( AHIP) explained that the Database will becomes check and balances for offenders.

She added that the Database will be official documents for organisation working with children, children and women.

Earlier in his welcome address, Ibrahim Bello Kano State Programme Coordinator Rule of Law and Anti Corruption (RoLaC) noted that there is already Sexual Offender Database at National level which was hosted by NAPTIP.

Bello also said ” Several States in the Federation have already established their Sexual Offender Database (SOD) and linked it with that of National.
