Kano Court Sets Date for Ruling on Bail Application in Culpable Homicide Case

A Kano State Magistrate Court has slated January 15, 2024, for the ruling on a bail application and further mention of a culpable homicide case involving six farmers allegedly linked to the death of a man during a herder/farmer conflict in Bagwai LGA’s Sarkin ‘Ya area.

The prosecution, led by Barrister Garzali Maigari Bichi from the Kano State Ministry of Justice, stated that Lamido Abubakar, Chairman of the Fulani Association in Kano, reported to the police that Sani Abdullahi of Sarkin ‘Ya conspired with Ilyasu Isah, Saleh Saidu, Isyaku Ya’u, Rabi’u Sani Nata’ala, Sani, and three others who are still at large allegedly obstructed herders with their cows at Sarkin ‘Ya, leading to the killing of 97 cows and the dispersal of 91 others, with an estimated value of N102.7 million.

The prosecution also alleged that the defendants burned nine motorcycles belonging to Fulani association members.

Additionally, he alleged that one person, Shehu Abubakar, was killed during the conflict.

The charges were read to the defendants, and they all pleaded not guilty.

Meanwhile, Defense counsel, Barrister Mujtapha Mujtapha Sani and Barrister O.M Shehu, requested bail for the defendants, citing relevant sections of the Constitution and ACJL 2019, assuring the court that the defendants would attend all future court hearings.

The prosecuting counsel, Bichi, opposed the bail application, referring to section 171 of the ACJL, 2019 Kano State.

Senior Magistrate Talatu Makama adjourned the case to January 15th for the ruling on the bail application and ordered the defendants to be remanded in the Correctional center.
