International Day Against Drug Abuse And Illicit Trafficking: NDLEA Seizures 9,000kg of Illicit Drugs In Kano

The Kano State Commader, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Isah Likita Muhammad said the command has from July 2020 to June 2021 made the seizure of 9,000 Kilogrammes of illicit drugs as part of the measure to curtail drugs supply in the state.

Likita Muhammad made this known at a press briefing as part of the activity to commemorate, 2021 International Day Against Drug Abuse And Illicit Trafficking.

He also said the Day was set aside by the United Nations for sober reflection on the devastating effects of illicit drugs on the health and well-being of society.

” Theme for the year 2021 is ‘Share Facts About Drugs Save Lives. This theme calls for deliberate truthful and frank cross discussion about drugs in order for the populace to be candidly armed with relevant facts such that they can make and adopt healthy life choice,”

The Commander disclosed that the job of NDLEA is two-fold, comprising of supply reduction and demand reduction to make both the users and traffickers of illicit drug useful to society.

” In the area of Supply reduction, a total of 8,983.461Kg of illicit drugs made up 7,701.906Kg of Cannabis Sativa, 1,281.333kg of Psychotrophic Substances, 0,157kg of Cocaine and Heroin were seized between July 2020 and June 2021.

” Within the same period, a total of 286 persons persons, comprising 261 males and 25 females were arrested, 155 persons were arraigned in court with 78 convictions ( 74 males and 4 females) secured, while 77 cases are pending.

The NDLEA Boss in Kano lamented the non-completion of the Rehabilitation Center at the Command Headquarters stated that the delay in completion has continued to affect ability at optimum performance in drug demand reduction.

” At the present we are only able to take in only 28 male clients only at a time. Due to the special need of female clients, we are at the present time not able to admit them.

“Although, the Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar ganduje has promised to complete the centre we are still waiting for the commencement of work. Notwithstanding, the State Command was able to rehabilitate 50 males and 1 female clients within the period in review.

” Also a total of 915 persons, made up of 843 males and 72 females were counseled, under the DDR brief intervention within the period under review.

Isah likita Muhammad explained that the command has continued to enjoy the support of Kano State Government in the discharge of its duty noting that at the present, Kano State is the only state in Nigeria that makes it mandatory for all state intending appointees to undergo drug test before appointment.

” Similarly, the Kano State traditional council, under the leadership of Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero has also made it compulsory for all traditional leaders aspirants to undergo drug test before being considered for any appointment”

The Commander pointed out the command collaborate with Bayero University, Kano to disseminate facts about drugs, especially the imfacts and affects of drug abuse on wonen, with particular attention on adolescent woman and girl child.

” The lecture that will be delivered by a renowned scholar, Dr. Bello Ibrahim will holistically examine the issues of drug abuse amongst women with special emphasis on the mental, reproductive and pyschological effects of drugs on women

Muhammad maintained that the command is working closely with all sister security agencies in the state.
