NURTW Appeals to Kano Governor to Respect Union Election Process

The Kofar Ruwa branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has urged Kano State Governor Engr Abba Kabir Yusuf to promptly address their concerns.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, several Union members alleged that specific individuals are leveraging the Governor’s name and power to interfere with the Union’s election procedures, contrary to the members’ desires.

Abdurrashid Abdullahi Hassan emphasized that the Union’s operations are governed by its constitution, which stipulates the election process for all positions.

He stressed that the NURTW is not affiliated with any political parties and urged the Kano State Governor to intervene in the matter.

He claimed that the branch’s leadership received a letter from the Kano State Ministry of Transportation instructing them to vacate their positions.

Additionally, he accused the NNPP ruling party of planning to install its supporter without following the election process.

Abdullahi Hassan emphasized that the Union’s members in the branch adhere to the law, and he urged Governor Yusuf to offer lasting solutions to their concerns.

Another Union member, Nasiru Ya’u, commonly referred to as Dogon Gare, warned that if the Government proceeds with its purported plan, more than 17,000 members will lose their livelihoods, putting the financial burden on their families.

He emphasized that the Union members are eagerly anticipating the Governor’s response to their appeals so they can determine their next steps.

During his address, A.A Haruna Ayagi, the Executive Director of the National Human Rights Network, stated that the Network had received the Union’s complaint.

He advised the government to permit the Union members to follow their constitution in changing their leadership rather than imposing leaders on them.

Ayagi reassured the Network’s commitment to supporting the Union in seeking justice.

Additionally, a confidential source within the Ministry of Transport, who requested anonymity, refuted all the accusations made by the NURTW members, of Kofar Ruwa Branch.

He clarified that the current leadership has exceeded their tenure in office, emphasizing that they do not have the authority to challenge government decisions.
