FUTB matriculates 550 students for 2023/2024 academic session

The Federal University of Technology, Babura, (FUTB), Jigawa, on Saturday officially admitted 550 students for the 2023/2024 academic session.

The Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the university, Prof. Sabo Ibrahim-Birninkudu, in his speech at the ceremony said the students comprised of 414 males and 39 females.

Ibrahim-Birninkudu said the 550 students matriculated are from School of Engineering and Technology and School of Science, Information and Communication Technology.

“It is well known that hundreds of students normally apply to universities of their first choice. But, the key determinants of their admission is their score in the JAMB aptitude examinations and their Senior Secondary School Leaving Certificate examination results.

“Based on these filters therefore, a total of 550 students have been admitted and are being matriculated today, as the second set of students, into the 2023/2024 academic session.

“I wish to therefore congratulate the parents and students who have scaled all academic hurdles to get to this point. Indeed, the University and your parents have very high expectations of you,” he said.

The VC explained that there was slight increase of 149 students intake compared to last year when the university matriculated its first set if 401students.

According to him, the female intake dropping by one (36 compared to 37 last year) and a male population increment in the School of Engineering Technology (148 new intakes compared to 115 last year).

The VC added that there is also an increase from 286 last year in the School of Science, Information and Communication Technology to 400 this year.

He advised the students to strive to uphold the oath of matriculation administered on them, and also abide by the rules and regulations governing their studentship life and related activities.

“Your parents have made a lot of sacrifices to hand you over to your lecturers, who are expected to mold you into model citizens, into men and women who are skilled in knowledge and would be leaders of a better tomorrow.

“Your parents expect you to work hard on your academic studies by prompt attendance to lectures, diligently carrying out practicals, group work and assignments or field work.

“You must therefore avoid all distractions especially social media and anti-social behavior; while upholding good conduct throughout your years of studies.

“For instance, decent dressing and keeping company with fellow hard working students brings respect and peace of mind as immediate rewards,” Ibrahim-Birninkudu advised.

He also warned the students that deviance and law breaking attracts a severe penalty on the short term and worse on the long term.

“Therefore you should avoid that path and be law abiding always and it is to your advantage and your duty to familiarize yourselves with the fundamental principles, core values and culture of excellence of our Great University, especially as articulated in the Students’ Handbook, which should be your constant companion for reference,” he added.

The VC admitted that as a young tertiary institution, the university was still grappling with teething problems of easing the transportation challenges of its staff and students between the two campuses and Babura town, at a time of infrastructural and facilities deficit.

He urged all stakeholders and agencies assisting the institution to continue with their support until it has attain the basic minimum and the most conducive atmosphere for teaching, learning and research.

“I wish to express our gratitude to the Federal Government agencies, intervention agencies, most especially TETFund for their support; distinguished members of the National Assembly who always support our cases of critical infrastructure needs; the Jigawa State Government, our host, for supporting our take-off and providing us with municipal services; and the good people of Babura Local Government who have graciously extended their hospitality to our staff and students,” he added.

He said the institution’s doors remained open for elected representatives, private philanthropists and corporate organizations as part of their Corporate Social responsibility to assist it with busses, boreholes, buildings, roads, workshop equipment and other needs.

Ibrahim-Birninkudu assured that all donations would be put to maximum use to ease the teething challenges of the young institution.

Those that graced the occasion were the Minister of Defence, Gov. Umar Namadi of Jigawa, Alhaji Badaru Abubakar, Emir of Dutse, Hamim Nuhu, Emir of Ringim, Alhaji Sayyadi Mahmud, Vice-Chancellors of Federal University Dutse, Bayern University Kano, Jigawa State University, Kafinhausa, Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, among others.
