Kano Residents Express Concern Over Release of TikToker Without Public Disclosure of Bail Conditions

Kano residents have raised concerns over the release of Murja Ibrahim Kunya from a correctional center without the public disclosure of her bail conditions.

The popular TikToker was arrested by operatives of the Kano State Hisba Board following allegations of sharing vulgar video content on her social media account, which was deemed contrary to the provisions of the Islamic law of Kano State, 2000.

The spokesperson of the Kano Hisbah, Mallam Lawal Ibrahim Fagge, told journalists that Kunya was arrested after receiving complaints from her neighbors about the promotion of immorality  in the community.

She was later remanded by the Kano State Shari’ah Court presided over by Mallam Nura Yusuf Ahmed, initially for a week at a  Correctional Center but was later released without the public disclosure of the conditions of her release.

This turn of events has sparked reactions in Kano.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kano Command  SC Musbahu Lawan Kofar Nasarawa, confirmed that the defendant is not currently in custody, stating that inmates are brought to the Correctional Center based on court detention orders and released according to court directives.

Efforts to obtain information from Muzammil Ado Fagge, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Shari’ah Court Division, regarding the bail conditions or termination of the case, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to multiple calls from Justice Watch News correspondent.

Barrister MM Isa, a legal practitioner in Kano, emphasized that the power to grant bail lies with the court, emphasizing the necessity of judiciously applying the power, especially in cases where the alleged offense may negatively impact society.
