Federal High Court sitting in Kano has ordered the remand of 28-year-old man, Abubakar Suleiman, in the custody of National Agency for the Prohibition
In Persons (NAPTIP) until March 25 for sentence.
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), charged Suleiman to court with one count charge bordering on trafficking in persons.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel Abdullahi Babale told the court that Abubakar was allegedly trafficked 30 female to Libya.
Babale explained to the court that the defendant was on Feb.10, conspired with one Salele (a Nigerien National) who is now at large and transferred 30 victims of human trafficking from Kano to Niger Republic through Babura border in Jigawa State enroute to Libiya.
“The defendants after receiving payment of N50,000 per person from the sponsors in Libya and Niger Republic, in the process paid each victim N45,000 and deducted the sum of N5,000 each as commission”
According to the prosecution the offence, contravened the provisions of Section 13(2)(c) of the Trafficking in Persons(Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act 2015.
The defendant, however pleaded guilty to the charge.
Babale tendered the defendant confessional statement and one of the victims statement as exhibit and urged the court to convict the defendant according to section 356 (2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015.
Counsel to the defendant, Barrister M B Isa, pleaded for leniency on behalf of his client noted that he was a first time offender.
“The defendant is married with five children and urged the court to temper justice with mercy according to section 416 (2) of ACJA 2015”.
