Naira Notes Circulation Deadline: Legal Practitioner Urges CBN to Rescind Decision

A Kano Based Legal Practitioner, Barrister Badamasi Suleiman Gandu has called on the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, (CBN) to extend the deadline earlier fixed for the old naira notes which will cease to be legal tender, for the interest of masses.

In a letter jointly signed by Barrister Gandu and other lawyers, dated 25th January, 2023 through the Apex Bank’s Kano Main Branch Controller, urged the Governor to rescind his earlier plan.

In a letter captioned , ‘PASSIONATE APPEAL FOR THE EXTENTION OF TIME WITHIN WHICH OLD NAIRA NOTES WILL SEIZE TO BE LEGAL TENDERS’
said they made the request considering the fact that most business associates in the rural area and even in some part of the urban area reject the old naira notes, meanwhile, the new notes remain. largely unavailable ahead of the 31st January, 2023, subjecting Nigerians to untold hardship as a result of non-circulation of the new naira notes.

According to them, the deadline will paralyze the economic activities in the country and erode confidence in the Naira as a legal tender, stressing that it will adversely affect economic and social wellbeing of Nigerians.

“An extension of the deadline for Four (4) weeks will help in preventing an avoidable situation where our nation descends into economic turmoil and
chaos.”

” lt is highly anticipated that this passionate appeal would be sympathetically looked into, in the interest of justice with a view to address the rejection of the old notes’ syndrome.

“We do hope, the Governor of the CBN will extend the time more especialy for the common man interest”.
