The Women Lawyers Congress has demanded a full explanation or an apology from Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf over alleged recent derogatory remarks made by his deputy, Aminu Abdussalam, in a widely circulated video.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by Chair lady of the Congress, Barrister Nafisa Abba Ismail alleged that the  remarks were directed against an individual referred to as ‘Gwaggo’, a term significant in Kano State due to its association with esteemed figures, noting that the implications of his words cannot be ignored.

The Women Lawyers further said, “It has become apparent that this is not an isolated incident, as it seems to be a habit of the Deputy Governor to insult highly respected and dignified individuals.

“Such behavior is entirely unbecoming of a person holding a position as high as that of a Deputy Governor. It raises serious concerns about his regard for decorum, leadership ethics, and respect for individuals who have contributed significantly to society.”

According to the statement “In light of this, the Women Lawyers Congress firmly demands that the Governor of Kano State, take immediate action to address this matter. We present the following options:

” Public Clarification: The Governor must explicitly disassociate Professor Hafsat Umar Ganduje from the speech in question, making it unequivocally clear that the remarks were not directed at her.

“Formal Explanation or Apology: If, however, the Deputy Governor’s remarks were indeed directed at Professor Hafsat Umar Ganduje, he must provide a thorough explanation for such an attack or, alternatively, tender a public apology to both Professor Hafsat Umar Ganduje and the good people of Kano State.” The Chair lady added.

Barrister Nafisa additionally pointed out that, “It is imperative to emphasize that this issue extends beyond an individual; it is a matter of principle, dignity, and respect for women in leadership and society. Professor Hafsat Umar Ganduje is regarded as a maternal figure in Kano State, and any verbal assault against her is not only unacceptable but also an affront to the values we uphold as a people.”

The Congress furthermore noted, “we are issuing a strong warning that if the Deputy Governor continues this habit of making derogatory statements against dignified individuals, the Women Lawyers Congress will be left with no choice but to take serious legal action against him. Public figures must be held accountable for their words and actions, particularly when they misuse their platforms to demean others.”

According to the statement similarly, the Women Lawyers Congress will not stand idly by while public figures use their influence to undermine women. We expect swift and decisive action to rectify this matter, as anything less would set a dangerous precedent for the treatment of women in governance and public service.” Barrister Nafisa Abba Ismail however stated.
