The arraignment of Hafsat Suraj, popularly known as Chuchu, and three other accomplices on Tuesday faced a slight hitch when the lead defense counsel, Barrister Huwaila Ibrahim Muhammad, requested an adjournment to study the contents of the charges and advise her clients before entering a plea.
Chuchu, along with the three defendants, is standing trial for the death of Nafiu Hafizu.
Justice Watch News recalls that they had previously been arraigned and remanded in the Correctional Service by the Kano Chief Magistrate Court, presided over by Hadiza Abdulrahman.
During Tuesday’s hearing, Barrister Muhammad stated that the defense had been served with the amended charge today and requested a short adjournment for consultation with the defendants.
Similarly, defense counsel Barrister Rabiu Shuaibu Abdullahi argued that it is a constitutional requirement for the defendant to fully understand the allegations against them in a language they understand before entering a plea.
