Jibia border re-opening: Customs records decline number of seizures

The Katsina Area Command Comptroller, Nigeria Customs Service, Dalha Wada Chedi says the command has collected the total sum N104.7 million and paid into the Federal Account from 1st May, 2022 to date, under the period in review.

Comptroller Chedi made this known to Journalists, during a press briefing on Thursday,  held at the Command’s headquarters.

He maintained that the command within the period under review also generated over N38.5 million revenue from seizures of various goods.

Acccording to him, “The command with the re-opening of Jibia Border is expected to discharge all of its statutory obligations which includes control of import and export through the re-opened Border by adhering to Customs procedures in collection of revenue and other regulations,”

He explained that the volume of export through Jibia Border within the period including “4,000 metric tones of liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) worth N998,205,392.04,  1,000 metric tone of cement worth N32,292,830.00,

“The Nigeria Export Supervision Scheme Fees for two (NESS) exported items are as follows:
LPG = N5,027,592.44
Cement = N183,942.77
Total NESS Fees N5,211,535.21,” he stated.

Chedi further explained that going by the Command’s previous Anti-smuggling records indicated a decline in the number of seizures from 1st May to date

He pointed out these achievements were directly connected to the Federal Government’s policy and other strategies employed by the command, these according to him include:
Re-opened Jibia Border provided opportunity to conduc Import and Export legitimately against smuggling through illegal routes.

Re-strategized operation procedures on anti-smuggling activities by constant patrols, surveillance, intelligence gathering and dissemination information accordingly.

Co-operation, collaboration and synergy with security, Government Agencies at the border and other Stakeholders at the Border Communities.

Dalha Wada similarly advised the business community to comply with all Import and export guidelines for a Seamless Importation
and exportation through the re-opened border.

He however enjoined the business community to utilize the opportunity provided by the Federal Government such as ETLS Convertion of intended informal exports into formal export procedures.

“Renewal of old Customs License Agencies and a call for opening new Customs License Agencies”

“The remaining people who are still in the old system of smuggling should come forward and embrace the change for their personnel, community, state and Country’s economic development at large.

He admonished that office and men of the Command always ready to heat the ground running in the quest to suppress and enhance revenue collection.
