Flood: Jigawa Canvasses Supports of Donor Agencies, Philanthropists

The Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Dr. Haruna Mairiga, has urged the government, donor agencies, and philanthropists to offer essential assistance to prevent flooding that ravaged numerous communities in 12 local government areas of the state.

Addressing Journalists Thursday, on  the ongoing flood incidence ravaging some parts of the state, Dr. Mairiga said the call was imperative to prevent the flood disaster ravaging the state in the year 2020.

The Executive Secretary, pointed out that from 1st to 13th August, 2024 the state has again witnessed several incidences of flood leading to the deaths of 16 persons in boat mishap and destruction of farmlands and houses.

“As predicted by NIMET, NIHSA and NEMA from part of July 2024, we have been experiencing flood incidences in various parts of the state resulting to loss of lives and property, several people were displaced from their home.”

He noted that that affected Local Government Areas, include: Buji, Kafin Hausa, Auyo, Hadejia, Birniwa, Malam madori, Garki, Taura, Gwaram, Kiyawa, Jahun and Dutse respectively.

He however said “the alarming thing is that, these is happening when we reached the peak of the rainy season, only Allah knows what these areas mentioned and many more like it would be.

Jigawa State government under the able leadership of His Excellency, Mal. Umar Namadi is doing a lot to protect and sustain the livelihood of the citizens, but then, when disaster comes all hands, most to be on deck to support the government efforts.

“It is pertinent that we should start soliciting for urgent humanitarian support to assist the internally displaced persons with either food or non-food items to be able to support the victim during the trying time and to rehabilitate them back to their houses when the flood draws back,”

The Executive Secretary revealed that the Agency has supported the affected communities with palliative items.

According to him, the communities include: Kagarko, Garki, Gantsa, Bulungu, Gwadayi, Taura and Nahuce,

He added that the items donated comprising: foodstuffs, Rubber mat, Blanket, Mosquito net, cash of money among others.
