Salma Ahmad Danbappha, Chairperson of Federation of International Women Lawyers, (FIDA), Nigeria, Kano branch has called on the Kano State government to allocate a special budget to support civil society organizations (CSOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in their fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

Addressing Journalists at a press conference in Kano, FIDA Chairperson, represented by immediate past Chairperson of the Association, Hajiya Bilkisu Ibrahim Suleiman emphasized that scourge of Gender-Based Violence requires urgent attention from the government, and key relevant stakeholders, stressing that it’s not something that can be overlooked.
She also highlighted the need for more support for the Waraka Sexual Assault Referral Centre, which is currently the only centre of its kind in Kano State.
She lamented that despite the growing population and increasing cases of sexual violence, the centre remains inadequate, and the previous government’s pledge to establish four additional centres in each Emirate Council domain remains unfulfilled.
“Despite facing numerous challenges, FIDA Kano remains committed to fighting against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the state.” She however said.
She added that to draw attention to the issue, FIDA Kano organized a protest march to the Government House during the previous administration, calling for urgent action to address the rising cases of GBV.
“In response, the government pledged to establish four additional Waraka Sexual Assault Referral Centers, but unfortunately, this promise was not fulfilled.”

“Undeterred, FIDA Kano continues to advocate for the rights of GBV victims, providing pro bono services to indigent members of society. These services include:- Representing victims in court, Accompanying victims to Waraka Centers to monitor the results, Ensuring that cases are sent to court in a timely manner for speedy action.” Danbaffa added.
She noted, these efforts require significant financial resources and time, which is particularly challenging during the current period of inflation, explaining that despite these challenges, FIDA Kano remains resolute in its commitment to fighting GBV and seeking justice for victims.
She maintained that FIDA Kano’s efforts to combat GBV are part of a broader mission to promote, protect, and preserve the rights and interests of women and children in Nigeria.
