According to the Command, the incident occurred on the evening of August 29, 2025, at approximately 8:45 PM noting that Officers stationed near the Guru Maharaji area flagged down a green Toyota Sienna van with registration number Lagos FKJ 443 YG, which was headed toward Osogbo.
The statement added that the vehicle reportedly exhibited suspicious behavior, prompting officers to conduct a thorough search.
The statement pointed out that during the inspection, law enforcement officers uncovered a transparent plastic parcel tightly sealed with tape, explaining that inside, they found counterfeit one-thousand-naira notes totaling N1,000,000.
It highlighted that the notes were grouped into three batches, each bearing identical serial numbers: N500,000 with serial number 235923 (500 notes), N300,000 with serial number 235922 (300 notes), and N200,000 with serial number 235921 (200 notes).
The driver, identified as Akande, claimed he was merely a courier. He told officers that he had received the parcel from an unidentified individual in Ojota, Lagos, and was instructed to deliver it to Osogbo.
However, he admitted that he was not provided with the name or contact details of the intended recipient. In a surprising twist, Akande alleged that he had been informed the package contained body cream.
CSP Osifeso Adewale, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Oyo State Command, emphasized the seriousness of the offense and the Command’s dedication to curbing financial crimes. “The Oyo State Police Command remains committed to combating currency counterfeiting and other financial crimes that jeopardize our economy and community safety,” he stated.
