Yumsuk Varsity Organises Public Lecture on Good Governance

The Yusuf Maitama Sule University (formerly Northwest) in Kano State, Yesterday organized a one-day public lecture titled ‘Good Governance’ which was held at the conference hall of the University.

Speaking at the occasion, the State Governor Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf described topic of the lecture as apt which comes at a material time, when good governance is highly needed in the country.

A statement by Sunusi A. K/Na’isa, Chief Information Officer, Min. for Higher Education, Kano,  the Governor,  was represented by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr. Yusuf Ibrahim Kofarmata, said absence of good governance may leave society prone to various challenges,  ranging from perpetual insecurity, endemic poverty, high rate of unemployment,  disregard for the rule of law, among others.

He called on the interllectuals and patriotic individuals to join hand together as a collective effort to face the coherent challenges.

“I must acknowledge that this event coincided with the Kano State government’s position in its campaign to solidify government and governance with transparent, accountable, fair, responsibility and responsive approaches,” the Governor said.

Engr. Abba Yusuf reiterated his government’s commitment to reforming the administration of the state with a view to improving capacity, transparent, accountability, and responsiveness of the state-owned Institutions, adding that the government is working round the clock to improve the transparency in the political system and ultimately make politicians account to people.

The Governor added that his government is committed to provide qualitative education to the young ones, through transformation of the Tertiary Institutions to be center of innovation and technology incubation, and center for robust research.

Others are restoration of policy for sponsorship of the best graduates Indigenes to pursue higher degrees and reopening of twenty-six entrepreneurial and skills acquisition institutes to the teeming youth in the state.

Moreover, he congratulated the organizers of the lecture and described it as timely, emphasizing that government alone cannot effectively attain to economic, social and political needs of everyone, implored well-meaning individuals and organizations to cooperate and put hand together with present administration to achieve it’s effort of overhauling the system and make Institutions, State and nation better.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Prof. Mukhtari Atiku Kurawa, said the University resolved to organize the public lecture aimed at sensitizing the political class and the general public on their expected roles to play as both citizens and leaders of the society.

“As you are aware, one of the principles of democratic leadership is to provide good governance which would lead to reaping the dividends and fruits of democratic government popularly elected by people,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor then appealed to the general public and philanthropists to contribute their quota in supporting the University in the area of Infrastructures, scholarship and endowments for the development of the institution.

During the occasion, the Emir of Kano was represented by Katikan Kano, Alhaji Habib Bello Dankade. Prof. Salisu Shehu presented a paper on good governance in Islamic perspective, while Prof. Kamilu Sani Fagge presented another on ‘Good governance in Nigeria’.

The lecture was chaired by Malam Abba Dabo, the programme attended by important personalities, comprising members of academia, political and traditional leaders, students, among others.
