Prosecution of High Profile Cases: We’re Second to Non – Malami

Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami (SAN) has said that no successive adminstration in the past had ever successfully prosecuted as well as securing convictions in number of high profile cases like the current Administration.

The Minister made the ascertion when he appeared as a Guest on Kano State Radio Corporation’s Live Program to gauge his performance in justice sector.

He said the prosecuting of corrupt government officials doesn’t only limited to Former Governors or past leaders but according to him extended to politicians within the present adminstration.

The Minister explained that in immediate past adminstration the anti graft agencies secured only 103 convictions in 5 years, noting that in one year alone the prosecuting agencies secured 2000 convictions.

He said federal government was not only interested in prosecuting corrupt officials but securing convictions against them to serve as deterent.

” Investigation, Prosecution and Convictions require doggedness, resilient and commitments from the part of prosecuting agencies.

Speaking on Virtual Court Proceeding recently launched as pilot at Kuje Correctional Centre, the Minister explained that the innovation was as a result of the threat posed by Covid -19 0pandemic which kept many people incommunicado at home.

Abubakar Malami stated that although Nigeria was among the country there were not fully constrain by Covid 19 but need to devise means to
to see that judicial system don’t suffer delay.

He maintained that Virtual sitting will reduce the cost implications while moving the defendants to the attend the court session.

He said Federal Government can channel the funds meant to transport defendants and movement of other judicial officers to other infrastructural development.

On Electoral Bill, the Minister explained that the bill contravenes section 42 of Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended.

He further explained that President Muhammmad Buhari critically look at each bill on the side of security, economy, law political and social and Nigerians before assenting.
