PAACA Highlights Media’s Vital Role in Electoral Awareness at Kano Workshop

Mr. Ezenwa Nwagwu, the Executive Director of the Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre for Africa, a Non Governmental Organization, has emphasized the significant role of the media in raising awareness among the public about the Electoral Act and other electoral processes, stating that its importance should never be underestimated.

At a one-day capacity-building workshop for media practitioners in Kano, he made the assertion about the Electoral Act.

He also said the workshop aimed to equip media professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills to understand and effectively communicate the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022.

Additionally, he added that the  workshop aimed to enable them to conduct step-down training and host informative radio programs on electoral laws.

He further explained that their engagement in Kano was part of a nationwide effort to popularize the legal framework of electoral processes.

” Despite the interest shown by Nigerians in electoral processes, there remains a lack of clarity about the legal framework. Even prominent Nigerians sometimes speak ignorantly about electoral processes. This realization prompted their movement across Nigeria.”

The Executive Director of the NGO mentioned that they have already visited five states, including Kano.

He emphasized that as Nigerians continue to practice democracy, their understanding of the significance of the legal framework will improve,
Polarizing this understanding is essential.

He mentioned that the Center had requested support and collaboration from the MacArthur Foundation.

In a remark, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano Council, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, applauded the Center for choosing Kano to host the workshop.

He affirmed that the media is prepared to offer a platform for stakeholders to educate the public on electoral processes.

The Chairman characterized the media as essential stakeholders in achieving the set objectives.
