One Kano Agenda wishes to express concern over the recent trajectory of political discourse in Kano State, following a comment made by the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas. While political expression is a vital part of our democratic culture, the tone and weight of our words, especially from persons in leadership, carry a responsibility that cannot be taken lightly.

Kano is a land of heritage and values, a place where leadership has historically been defined by restraint, wisdom, and deep respect for public conduct. Our political and traditional institutions alike have long symbolized honour and decorum. It is this tradition that makes the current moment worthy of sober reflection.
In this spirit, we remember the towering legacy of the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, whose reign for decades was marked by calm dignity and statesmanlike silence in the face of provocation. Despite the tremendous influence he wielded, not once was he heard making divisive, controversial, or careless remarks. He embodied the very best of Kano’s values; restraint, maturity, and respect.

It is especially poignant to note that Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas hails from the noble lineage of this same royal house. This connection is a powerful reminder of the legacy that rests upon the shoulders of those who carry such names. The greater the heritage, the greater the responsibility to lead by example.

Even more concerning is the subtle shift in tone we have begun to notice among a few members of the political class in response to such comments. Politics is a competitive space, but it need not be a destructive one. The health of our democracy depends on how we disagree with civility, not hostility; with ideas, not insults.
One Kano Agenda believes that Kano must remain a model of disciplined, respectful, and principle based politics. This is not about one party or one personality, it is about the soul of our public space and the example we are setting for the next generation.
We therefore urge all political actors, elders, party leaders, and aspiring voices to rise above the temptation of reactive or provocative rhetoric. Our disagreements can be sharp, but our language must be measured. Our ambitions can be high, but our conduct must be higher. Kano does not need politics that divides. It needs politics that builds with dignity, honour, and mutual respect.
Let us return to that path.
