NUJ Kano Chair, Dederi, Outlines 5-point agenda to enhance Journalism Standards

Comrade Suleiman Abdullahi Dederi, the Chairman of the Kano State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has shed light on his five-point agenda to enhance the Council’s standing.

During a live radio program on Nasara Radio, Chairman Dederi and his Secretary, Comrade Abubakar Shehu Kwaru, expressed gratitude to Kano journalists for entrusting them with their mandate.

They emphasized that their administration would contribute significantly to journalism in Kano by revealing more insights.

Comrade Dederi maintained that his administration will focus on a five-point agenda, which includes capacity building, welfare, ethics and discipline, transparency and accountability, as well as the promotion of inclusiveness.

Explaining his agenda, Comrade Dederi also stated that he will collaborate with key stakeholders, such as veterans, practicing journalists, security agencies, civil society organizations, journalism institutions, and others, to create a vibrant journalism community in Kano.

The Chairman further mentioned that his administration will establish five committees to enhance the standards of the council under his guidance. These committees include:

Advisory Committee: Comprising former chairmen and secretaries of the Council, this committee will provide valuable insights. Ethics and Disciplinary Committee. This committee aims to address issues related to fake journalists that have persisted in the state and handle professional misconduct cases. Contact and Welfare Committee: Responsible for the well-being of members, as outlined in the Union’s constitution.

Others include: Education Committee: Tasked with capacity building, mentoring, and knowledge sharing. And Press Centre Committe: Ensuring the cleanliness of the press center environment and overseeing activities within the center.

The Chairman hailed  the legacies left by the immediate past executives of the Council, emphasizing that he and his team, as youth, will leverage their energy and drive to bring further development to Kano journalism.

He also stated that his door is always open for advice from all members.

Similarly, the Secretary of the Council, Comrade Abubakar Shehu Kwaru, emphasized the eligibility criteria and procedures for becoming a member of the NUJ, noting out that the constitution details every activity of the Union.

The Secretary also mentioned that the Union will adhere to the Constitution in carrying out its activities.

He emphasized that the current administration
prioritizes young journalists facing professional challenges.

Comrade Kwaru noted that the council will ensure the registration of other chapels in to the council, raising concerns that only 11 out of 32 chapels have so far completed their registration with the council.

He further mentioned that the immediate past executives team registered five chapels simultaneously, emphasizing that the current leadership intends to expand their scope to more chapels.

He encouraged members to promptly pay their check-off dues, emphasizing that the constitution acknowledges committed members.

He appealed to media organization owners to prioritize staff welfare and adhere to journalistic standards.

The Secretary applauded management of Nasara Radio for free air time for  the council to conduct its maiden Radio program.
