Nigerian Army Civil- Cooperation: COAS tasks media on professionalism

The Chief of Army Staff COAS Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja has urged media practitioners to avoid disseminating fake news or inflammatory contents that can undermine the national interest and security.

The Chief of Army Staff, General Lagbaja made the assertion while delivering a keynote address of the Nigerian Army Civic Quarterly Media Chat Second Quarter 2024 held in Kano.

He reiterated Nigerian Army’s commitment to improving media access to its operations within the bounds of operational security.

“We understand the need for accurate reporting on our activities, as it aids in building trust between the Nigerian Army and the civil population.

” This underscores the significance of a consistent and transparent communication strategy implemented by the Nigerian Army.”

The Chief of Army Staff, represented by General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Mayirenso Lander David Saranso,
emphasized the cruciality of acknowledging and embracing respective roles and responsibilities within Nigerian Army and Media partnership.

He noted that as the Nigerian Army diligently fulfils its constitutional mandates, it is equally imperative for the media to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, accuracy, impartiality, and patriotism.

The COAS, revealed that on doing so, media practitioners can ensure that their reports contribute positively to national security objectives.

In essence, he added that Media Chat signifies Nigerian Army’s unwavering dedication to transparent and effective communication between the Nigerian Army and the media practitioners.

He stated that as the Nigerian Army continue to conduct kinetic and non- kinetic operations geared towards complete elimination of elements and purveyors of insecurity in the country, he urged all well-meaning Nigerians to keep faith with their army and continue to support our activities.

The Nigerian Army Boss also solicitedbb the cooperation and understanding of the media to be committed to the ideals of responsible and professional practices by being balanced and objective in their reporting of security matters.

” Balanced and objective reporting requires a deliberate effort to ensuring that national interest and security are not jeopardized on the basis of press freedom and the urgency to be the first to break the news.

“Therefore, media executives and editors should be circumspect when issues of national security and survival are concerned. I therefore urge you to be committed partners with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies as we collectively unite to combat insecurity in our country so as to restore peace, stability and progressive development for this generation and indeed future generations” General Lagbaja maintained

In remark, the Chief of Civil- Military Affairs, Major General Nosakhare Ugbo explained that Nigerian Army Quarterly Civic-Military cooperation, Media Chat serves as a platform to synergise efforts, improve communication and foster a strong and collaborative relationship between the Nigerian Army and the Media for national security.

He further explained that the selection of Kano as the venue for this Media Chat is significant as it facilitates the active participation of Media executives and other participants within Kano and its environs.

Additionally he said, it seeks to motivate members of the fourth Estate of the Realm in the region to consistently support and present the Nigerian Army in a positive light through constructive and impartial reporting.

In his speech, the Kano State Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Baba Halilu Dantiye, represented by Director of Internal Affairs Usman Bello said Kano State Gove rnment is committed to assist security agencies to discharge their constitutional role in the state.

He extolled the Nigerian Army for bringing the Media Chat to Kano, stating that might not be unconnected with vibrant media presence.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Kano Council, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, encouraged the Nigerian Army to chascade such events to the Brigade command in order to enhance and reinforce the partnership between the Nigerian Army and the media.

He highlighted that Kano has more than 34 radio stations, as well as 10 television stations, along with numerous correspondents and online media platforms.
