The attention of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has been drawn to circulating reports suggesting a bomb blast at the Maiduguri Custodial Centre in Borno State.

The Service wishes to categorically state that no such incident occurred and the reports are false, misleading, and aimed at creating unnecessary panic among the public.

In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the Service Public Relations Officer, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) Abubakar Umar, affirmed that operations at the Maiduguri Custodial Centre remain stable and secure, with inmates continuing their rehabilitation and treatment programmes without disruption.

“There has been no explosion or security breach at the Maiduguri Custodial Centre or any other correctional facility across the country,” Umar said. “All inmates are safe, and daily operations are running smoothly. The public is advised to disregard any rumour suggesting otherwise.”

He further stated, “The public is also enjoined to remain calm, as all inmates in our custodial centres are going about their treatment regime and there is no cause for alarm.”

The NCoS strongly cautioned against the spread of unverified information, especially on social media, as it can erode public confidence and create unwarranted fear.

The Service urged individuals and media outlets to verify information from credible and official sources before dissemination, particularly concerning issues of national security.

The Nigerian Correctional Service reiterated its unwavering commitment to the safety, security, and well-being of inmates, staff, and the general public. The Service remains proactive in managing and protecting all custodial centres across the country.

The Maiduguri Custodial Centre, like others across Nigeria, plays a vital role not only in secure detention but also in the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates into society as responsible citizens.
