Kano NDLEA arrests 1,064 suspects, seizes 7530.813kg illicit drugs in 12 months

No fewer than 1,064  suspects were apprehended by operatives of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA) in Kano from June 2022 to June 2023.

ASN II Sadik Muhammad Maigatari, Ag. Public Relations Officer, NDLEA, Kano Command, made the disclosure in a statement issued, Saturday.

He said the suspects arrested include 1,001 female and 63 females.

He also said the command within the period under review recovered a total of 7530.813kg, which include 5228.673kg of cannabis, 2096.837kg of psychotropic substances, cocaine, 47.013kg and heroin, 65.24kg.

Mr. Maigatari stated that a total of 96 clients were admitted in the  command’s Drug Demand Reduction (DOR),  noting that 92 were males and 4 females.

He further stated that from the number, 68 were discharged, while 28 still under rehabilitation.

“We also conducted brief intervention on 1081 people, mostly males (701) and females (380).

“In our prosecution unit, we charged to court a total number of 93 cases from June 26th, 2022, to June 26th, 2023, and secured 111 convictions.”

The Ag. PRO added that the command currently has 126 pending cases.

He stressed that the command adoption of the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign program, as  a prevention approach, proven to be highly effective.

“This year, we achieved remarkable success in dislodging notorious drug joints and arresting dealers and users.

“Some of the joints we raided and dislodged
include Sani Abacha indoor stadium, Bubbles club, Kofar Na’isa, and many more.” He explained.

He noted that during the 2023 election exercise, NDLEA in Kano utilized its strike force unit to ensure a peaceful and successful election by cracking down any drug activity that could induce violence. Before and after the inauguration, and sensitized the city to ensure a smooth affair.

The Kano Ag Public Relations Officer, Muhammad Maigatari on behalf the  entire command, commended Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Agency Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd) for his unwavering support, which has helped to achieve-the success.

“The creation of two additional area commands in Rano and Tudun Wada which he approved has also enhanced our capability to crack down on drug abuse and trafficking in the state.”
