Kano/Jigawa Customs Controller Calls for Stronger Collaboration with Journalists

The Comptroller of the Kano/Jigawa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Comptroller Dalhatu Abubakar, has expressed delight over the visit of the executive members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State Council, to his office.

He described the visit as a step towards deepening mutual cooperation between the Customs Service and the media.

Comptroller Abubakar, who officially assumed duty in February, emphasized the importance of the media in national development, saying the Comptroller General of Customs recognizes the role journalists play in society, hence the need to foster a stronger relationship with them.

He said there is a cordial relationship between the Nigeria Customs Service and the NUJ, and we are committed to strengthening it,

He challenged members of the NUJ to embark on investigative reporting to better understand the current reforms and developments within the Customs Service.

He noted that the Service has undergone significant transformation in its operations and transparency.

The Comptroller also called for greater collaboration between the Customs and journalists in promoting public awareness campaigns—particularly on issues such as the fight against drug abuse and other social vices.

“We want the media to televise and highlight the positive activities and statutory duties of the Customs Service, stressing his zero-tolerance stance on bribery and corruption.

He reassured the union of his full support and readiness to work together in the public interest.

In his remarks, the Secretary of the NUJ Kano Council, Comrade Abubakar Shehu Kwaru, said the current executive members of the council were elected in August last year.

He reiterated the union’s commitment to upholding professional ethics and serving the public through accurate information dissemination.

He stated that one of our primary responsibilities as journalists is to educate and create awareness among the public.

Comrade Kwaru noted that the visit aimed to reinforce the longstanding relationship between the NUJ and the Nigeria Customs Service.

He acknowledged the Customs’ role in boosting the nation’s economy and requested their support in using the NUJ Conference Hall for Customs-related activities and public engagements.

He assured the Comptroller that journalists under the NUJ in Kano would continue to uphold the principles of integrity and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
