The arraignment of Hafsat Suraj at the Kano High Court on Thursday took a dramatic turn as the defendant remained silent when asked if she understood the charges against her.

The presiding judge, Justice Zuwaira Yusuf Ali, had to repeat the question three times and Hafsat continued to remain mute.

This unexpected development led to the prosecution counsel, Aisha Mahmoud, about to request the court to refer the defendant to a psychiatric hospital. However, the presiding judge abruptly ordered her to stop.

As a result, the judge decided to adjourn the case until noon.
