FG Frees 15 Inmates at Katsina Custodial Center

The Federal Government has granted freedom to 15 inmates at the Malumfashi Satellite Custodial Facility in Katsina through the intervention of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. The government paid fines and compensation on behalf of the inmates.

He said the Controller General of Nigerian Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa, commended the Minister for the initiative, expressing gratitude for bringing smiles to the faces of the released inmates during this advent period.

CGC Nababa also acknowledged that the action, which is the first of its kind in the history of the country, will help alleviate overcrowding in the custodial centers, leading to improved service delivery in line with international best practices.

He added that during his speech, Controller of Corrections for Katsina State Command, Muhammad Abdulmumin Haruna, encouraged inmates who were not included in the list of those released to view their incarceration as an opportunity for a fresh start. He urged them to adhere to the rules and regulations of the custodial center and maintain good behavior.

The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of ten thousand naira (N10,000) to each of the released inmates to facilitate their transportation back home.
