Delta Police Clamp Down on Kidnapping, Cultism, Arrest Three, Recover Arms

In a significant crackdown on crime in Delta State, the police have arrested three individuals suspected of involvement in a series of kidnappings and cult-related activities.

The arrests, which took place between May 10th and May 14th, 2024, have brought some relief to the communities plagued by these criminal acts.

SP Edafe Bright Delta Police Command Spokesperson in a statement issued Thursday, said the first of the arrests occurred on May 11th, when Yakubu Ya’u, a 20-year-old suspect from Kaduna, was apprehended in Warri after a joint operation by local police and the Force Intelligence Unit from Abuja.

Ya’u, who is believed to frequent Oha and Ughwagba communities in Okpe LGA for his kidnapping operations, was found alongside two automatic pump action guns, one live cartridge, and a knife that were concealed in the bush.

He also said following Ya’u’s arrest, two more suspects were detained on May 12th; Musa Yakubu, a 25-year-old from Kogi State, and Abdulahi Mohammed, a 38-year-old from Cameroon.

He revealed that both alleged to be key members of the kidnapping gang responsible for several incidents in Orerokpe, Sapele, Warri, and surrounding areas.

SP Bright noted that the Victims have identified the suspects, who are now aiding the police in their ongoing investigations.

He pointed out that on May 10th, Michael Udo, a 20-year-old male, was arrested in Ozoro following a tip-off, noting that a search of his premises led to the recovery of a locally made revolver gun and two live cartridges.

The investigation into his activities is still underway.

He emphasized that the third incident involved a distress call to the DPO Obiaruku Division about forced cult initiation.

According to him, police responded promptly, arresting 31-year-old Chinedu Okolo of Ezhionum Community.

He explained that a locally made double barrel pistol and a handset taken from the victim were recovered.

CP Abaniwonda Olufemi has issued a stern warning to youths against engaging in criminality, cultism, and drug abuse.

He reassured the public of the police’s commitment to maintaining peace and order in the state.

He assured that the Delta State Police Command remains vigilant and is actively pursuing other members of the gangs who are still at large.
