The Kano Election Petition tribunal sitting in Kano has declared Alhaji Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna as winner of the 2023 Gubernatorial election following the confirmation of votes considered by the Tribunal as invalid.

It could be recalled that during the 2023 Gubernatorial Election, INEC has declared that the NNPP Gubernatorial Flag bearer, Mallam Abba Kabir Yusuf has scored a total votes of 1,019,602 against Alhaji Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of APC who scored a total votes of 809,705 which eventually made Abba Kabir Yusuf officially the Governor.
Dissatisfying with the result, the All Progressives Congress leadership in Kano took the decision to challenge the result in Kano for what it believed as a flawed election.

Delivering the 7 hour judgement, via zoom, the presiding Tribunal judge, Justice Oluyemi A. Osadebay said the petitioner has proven the allegation the invalidity of some of the votes cast on the ground that the election was not in compliance with the provision of the Electoral Act, 2022, and therefore ordered that the invalid votes wrongly credited to Abba Kabir Yusuf be expunged from those counted.

Justice Osadebay consquently ordered INEC to set aside the certificate of return earlier issued to Abba Kabir Yusuf and be presented to Alhaji Yusuf Gawuna having satisfied the requirements of provided in the electoral process.
Earlier the Tribunal has averred that eventhough the issue of membership of a contestant is a constitutional matter and party affairs, affirming that Abba Kabir has not followed the required procedures of becoming a full plegde party member and NNPP and accordingly not qualified to contest the election.
