3 injured, 6 rescued after farmer/herder clash in Jigawa

The Jigawa State Police Command has stated that normalcy has been restored following a clash between farmers and herders that occurred near Kalai village, close to the Baranda forest in Kiyawa Local Government Area of the state.

The Spokesman of the Command made this known while briefing journalists on Wednesday.

He said on the 25th June, 2024 at about 1415hrs, information was received from a good Samaritan that, herdsmen attacked farmers and let loose their cattle in the victim farmland at Kalai village, near Baranda forest.

He added that on receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer of Kiyawa Division alongside his patrol team, the Kiyawa Local Government Council, the chairman of Kautal Hore, Miyetti Allah, and the Association of Farmers of Nigeria (AFAN) and also the four affected village heads were mobilized to the scene to assess and calm the situation.

He added that, while dialogue was ongoing among the critical stakeholders, the team of Policemen seized the opportunity to identify three (3) injured victims and rescue six (6) others who were about to be attacked.

DSP Shiisu noted that the victims were rushed to the hospital for treatment, they were treated and discharged.

“No arrest was made to avoid a chaotic situation, however, two of their leaders were identified and will be invited to the station through Kautal hore and Miyetti leadership.”

“Preliminary Investigation revealed that the herders acted on misleading information that, the state government revoked all farmland within the forest reserve that was allocated for farming activities.”

Similarly, according to him, an emergency security meeting with relevant stakeholders will be scheduled today Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at Kiyawa local government secretariat.

He pointed out that Patrol is being intensified in the area to avert further breach of peace.
