The Police Command in Gombe State says it has arrested eight suspected criminals in its efforts to combat, prevent and detect crimes in all parts of the State and that in line with the constitutional responsibilities of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Commissioner of Police Gombe State, Mr Ishola Babatunde Babaita, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued to newsmen by the Command Spokesman SP. OBED MARY MALUM on Tuesday.
The suspects include: two kidnapping suspects, and six impersonation suspects, adding that the suspects were arrested at different times and locations.
The statement said that based on complaints received, Police Operatives attached to State Intelligence Bureau Gombe arrested one Halliru Umar Aliyu,32 and Ahmed Ladan alias “Sarkin Baja”, 42, in connection to a case of Criminal Conspiracy, Intimidation, kidnapping and Extortion.
“Sometimes in the year 2021, the first suspect Aliyu of Tudun Wada quarters Gombe was given a tricycle to ride after his business has collapsed by his sister in-law.
” In the process the said Aliyu later sold the tricycle in the sum of N250,000 without the knowledge of the owner.
” Upon request of the tricycle or her money, the suspect failed to bring any, on the 30th December,2021, he criminally conspired with the second suspect Ladan and faked a kidnap of the said Aliyu with the intension to extort his elder sister one Zainab Umar Aliyu, the sum of N500,000 to enable him refund the money”
Babatunde-Babaita further explained that the suspects called and threatened the victim using her brother’s phone that unless the said sum of money is paid into her brother’s Bank account before he will be released or else will be killed.
The statement added that on 31st December 2021 at about 1830hours, police operatives from Billiri Division while on stop and search operations at Kalmai junction arrested Gambo Zakari,30, and five others for impersonation.
” Three among the suspects were wearing Nigerian Army camouflage uniform, while the three others were wearing hunter’s uniform, armed with dane guns”
He maintained that the command recovered, two small dish bowl, one mat, one plastic kettle, two dane guns and one single barrel gun as exhibits, in the course of the investigation.
“The suspects confessed that the uniform was given to them by one Pte. Michael Jude serving at 151 Battalion Bama Borno State a native of Billiri.
” Investigation is going on and the suspects will subsequently be charged to court for prosecution”
He called on individuals or groups with such nefarious act to desist from such and assures the good people of the State of its readiness and commitment in fulfilling its constitutional mandate.
” To protect lives and properties and also information given will be treated with utmost confidentiality”
