Anti Daba Unit: NBA petitions Kano police commissioner over alleged torture to death of 21 year old boy

The Nigerian Bar Association has petitioned the Kano Commissioner of Police over activities of the Anti Daba Unit of the command that allegedly led to the death of one Abdulgafar Nasiru (deceased) 21yrs old.

Solacebase reports that the deceased a tailor/Keke Napep Rider with KAROTA No. 0862KMC (A Daidaita Sahu) was a resident of Bakin Zuwo Quarters, Kano Municipal L.GA. Kano.

In the petition signed by Nigerian Bar Association, Kano Branch, Human Rights Committee, Chairman, Abbas Haladu, demanded the establishment of an independent and unbiased committee for Inquiry/investigation into the act of alleged torture by men at the Anti-Daba Unit resulting in the death of the deceased.

The petition also asked for suspension during the period of the committee sitting/investigation of all men suspected to be involved directly or indirectly in the loss of life of the innocent and promising young man

It similarly requested for the immediate release of the corpse of the deceased to the family of the slain innocent boy by signing a release letter for the conduct of an independent forensic analysis/autopsy as to cause of death (with finality).

Nigerian Army Institutes Investigation Into Alleged KIlling of Final Year Student, University of Calabar

Nigerian Army has said its attention has been drawn to a viral video alleging the killing of a final year student of the University of Calabar, Mr Gray Agbesu, on Friday 9 July 2021 by a serving soldier deployed on duty at the Calabar Correctional Service facility.

This was made known in a statement by Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu Director Army Public Relations.

The statement said that on receiving the information, the soldier was apprehended by own troops, while trying to flee out of the town to evade arrest.

” He is currently in the custody of the Military Police and investigation has commenced to ascertain the circumstances that led to the killing of the student.

” The Commander, 13 Brigade visited the scene of the incident and addressed the youths. He assured them of the commitment of Nigerian Army authorities towards ensuring that justice prevails in the unfortunate incident.

The statement also stated that the Brigade Commander has also paid a visit to the family of the deceased, where he reiterated the Army’s resolve to ensure that the family gets justice over the killing of their son.

” The Commander has equally visited the Cross River State General Hospital, where the remains of the deceased was deposited.

” The Nigerian Army remains a disciplined and professional organization and will not condone such unprofessional conduct by any of its personnel. “We assure the family and the community, that the soldier will be duly investigated and made to face judicial processes as deemed appropriate by the law”. The statement added.

Judiciary/Legislature autonomy: Governors meet Wednesday on implementation

Members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) have scheduled a meeting for Wednesday to among others, strategise on ways to ensure the actual implementation of financial autonomy for state Judiciary and Legislature.

The Head, Media and Public Affairs, NGF, Abdulrazaque Bello-Barkindo said, in a statement on Monday, that the issue would form a major item on the agenda of virtual meeting, scheduled to commence at 2pm.

States Unveil Plans To Implement Financial Autonomy For Legislature, Judiciary

Bello-Barkindo said the governors would also deliberate on the Memorandum of Action (MoA) endorsed by representatives of the NGF, the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) and the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) and other stakeholders before the over two-month old strike by judicial and parliamentary workers was suspended.

He noted that efforts were already under way in all states to either constitute the States Accounts Allocation Committees (SAAC) or to inaugurate them, preparatory to the granting of full autonomy to Legislature and Judiciary at the state level.

Financial Autonomy: NGF Agreement with JUSUN not Binding on Rivers – Wike

Part of the statement reads: “The return to work by the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) and the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) which begins Tuesday after the democracy day holiday, will top the agenda of the 31st NGF meeting which takes place, virtually, on Wednesday 16th June 2021.

“Efforts are already under way in all states of the federation, to either constitute the States Accounts Allocation Committees (SAAC) or inaugurate them, preparatory to the granting of full autonomy to the two arms of government, namely, the legislature and the judiciary at the sub-national level.

“JUSUN and PASAN have been on a nationwide strike for more than two months, while governors of the 36 states worked day-and-night to establish modalities for their autonomy in conformity with the constitutional provisions that stipulated thus.

Governor Lalong Directs Full Implementation of Judiciary, Legislative Autonomy

“The Governors’ meeting will be briefed before deliberating on the Memorandum of Action (MoA) of this main item on the agenda.

“According to the invitation to all the 36 governors as issued by the Director-General of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, Mr Asishana Bayo Okauru, the governors will be updated on the activities of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on Covid 19, a regular feature of the governors’ meetings, by the Governor of Delta State, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa who heads the governors’ interface with the PTF.

“The meeting will also review the agenda of the NEC which takes place a day after. Other items on the agenda include the regular update on the States’ Fiscal Transparency, Accountability and Sustainability for results (SFTAS) to provide states’ status on their DLI’s and upcoming deadlines.

“The meeting will also receive two presentations: Director General, Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), will make a presentation regarding unlocking liquidity through sale/optimization of state-owned redundant/sub-optimal assets, while the Policy Development Facility (PDF) bridge programme will discuss diversification and non-oil export opportunities for states post-Covid-19.

Today 8th May, 2021 being the Birthday of Henry Dunant, the founder of the RC/RC Movement is been set a side across the World to celebrate it with some humanitarian activities.

We thanked almighty Allah for making it possible to witness this year 2021.

However, it comes during the best period of time for the Holy month of Ramadan, while also facing some challenges of Security, Economic, Health Etc.

In veiw of this, I wish to use this opportunity to express my personal and official position to thank all our NRCS Kano Volunteers and Staff for their usual team work and Support in helping the Vulnerable people in Kano State.

 

During the year 2020 which was dominated by COVID-19 Corona Virus and affected the general lives across the World.

May I please request everyone to continue to Pray for Peace and good health in our Country Nigeria and the entire World at Large.
