Energy Theft: Kano Court Sentences 2 Persons 18 Months Imprisonment

A Kano State Magistrate Court on Thursday sentenced one Mu’ammar Aliyu Getso alongside his younger brother, Suleiman Aliyu Getso who is now at large to one Year In Correctional Center for conspiracy and consuming electricity energy for 15 months without payment.

Delivering her judgment shortly after the convict pleaded guilty to the offence Magistrate Sakina Yusuf said the offence is punishable under section 97 sub section 286 sub section 2 of Panel code Law of Kano State. Consequently, ordered the defendant to pay KEDCO the sum of N101,250.00 or spend one year in prison.

She also ordered that the convicts pay the sum of N20,000 as fine or serve six month in prison.

Reacting to the judgement, the Assistant Superintendent of Police, with the Special Investigation and Prosecution Taskforce on Electricity Offences (SIPTEO) Kano Branch, Aliyu Bamalli revealed that the convict had consumed electricity for 15 months without payments.

He further charged all and sundry to shy away from energy theft or face the wrath of the law.
