1st Quarter 2023 : NAFDAC carries out 280 regulatory activities in Kano… Approves 20 Products

The Kano Coordinator, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, (NAFDAC) Mr. Kassim Idrissa Ibrahim has said that the Agency has carried out 280 regulatory activities in Kano during the first quarter of this year.

Mr Idrisa Ibrahim made this known at a press briefing, held in his office.

He said the aim of the briefing was to inform the general public the activities of the Agency within the first quarter of this year, under review.

He also said from the total of 280 regulatory activities it carried out, 85 of it were conducted under Routine Inspection.

The Kano NAFDAC Boss, revealed that from the total number of activities it conducted within the period, 35 companies  were found to be wanting and contravening laws of the Agency. This according to him made the Agency to go for Routine Inspection.

He, however said within the period under review, the Agency made inspection to 52 products that were sought for the approval, noting that 20 got approval.

He stressed that “After the inspection of a product needed to be approved we further make recommendations to National Headquarters of NAFDAC.”

He explained that Routine Inspection is carried out by Agency’s Regulatory Officers whichout necessarily informing company or manufacturers of their coming.

The Coordinator, further explained that the essence of the impromptu inspection was to audit the company’s good manufacturing practice.

“Routine Inspection served as Post Marketing Surveillance. When we register your product by implications we give a stamp and authority and you’re found to be worthy to produce your product.”

He, however said it is the mandate of the Agency to monitor manufacturer closely to know weather he operate within the rules and guidelines under which the Agency registered his product.

Mr. Idrissa Ibrahim pointed out that within the period under review, 52 different entities apply to NAFDAC seeking their product to be registered with NAFDAC.

He maintained that the Agency had evaluated their good manufacturing practice to ensure that they are competent and possess all the necessary production equipments which their product needed.

He noted that within the First Quarter under review, the Director General of NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye flagged off sensitization campaign against indiscriminate use of bleaching cream, organised for Northwest Journalists, held in Kano.

Mr. Idrissa Ibrahim, further explained that the Director General of NAFDAC participated in the commission of the coordinated warehouse for pharmaceutical distribution in Kano.

He added that the Agency under his watch during the first quarter under review has carried out series of engagements with its stakeholders with a view to sensitizing and curtailing the use of counterfeit drug and food in Kano and Nigeria at large.
